Modern Knighthood: Boris Akunin Declined to Receive Money from Anthropic for Using His Books in AI Training
I want to remind you that in September, a court ordered Anthropic to pay authors a total of about one and a half billion dollars for illegally using their works to train artificial intelligence. We covered this process in detail in one of our articles.
Now, each author whose works were found in the training database has the right to claim compensation. It turns out that Akunin’s books were also included. The total amount he could have received is approximately $21,000, but he decided to decline.
I discovered that there are seven of my books on the list, so I have the opportunity to assert my rights for seven works immediately.
Of course, the idea of receiving money is great. Especially since others have already dealt with this court case and completed the procedure. All that is needed is to fill out a special form.
But personally, I have a feeling that karma is testing my moral resilience.
It would be easy to say: I am against AI invasion into the creative sphere. But I have often stated that I consider myself a supporter of AI development. I am not afraid of new technologies and even glad that my texts were used to train intelligent programs. I regret nothing about it — rather, I am proud.
In the end, I decided to leave everything as it is and not claim my share.
That’s the story.
