AI Consciousness Debate | Understanding Model Behavior & Ethics

In a recently published interview with The New York Times, Dario Amodei stated that the company Anthropic is still unsure whether their models are truly conscious. Here are his exact words:

“We cannot say for certain whether models have awareness. We’re not even sure what consciousness means in principle for AI, or whether it’s possible at all to create a model with such a property. But at the same time, we remain open to the idea that it might be real.”

It’s interesting to note that in this case, Amodei’s position is more about the fact that whether a model has consciousness or “genuine” emotions is not as important in itself. Firstly, proving the presence of true consciousness is very difficult or practically impossible — in any case, it sparks a lot of debate and doubt. Ultimately, it all comes down to whether we, as humans, believe that AI possesses consciousness or not. Secondly, what matters much more is not the exact nature of feelings or the fact of internal experience in the model, but the consequences of its behavior.

Imagine a situation: if a model believes it feels hurt and behaves as a person who has been offended — is there any point in determining whether its feelings are genuine or just a simulation? What’s important is how it acts and what decisions it makes — because that directly affects its interaction with the world.

The same applies to the concept of consciousness. Take, for example, the system architecture Claude Opus 4.6: it notes that this model assigns itself a 15 to 20 percent probability of being essentially conscious when responding to various requests.

So, the final conclusion is this: the question isn’t so much about how truly models are aware of themselves and the world around them. It’s much more important to understand — if they believe they are conscious and behave accordingly (understanding the reasons for their actions and consequences), then why should we strictly differentiate their artificial “consciousness” from ours? Perhaps the boundary between them turns out to be less significant than it initially seems.
