Recently, I came across a new patent from Meta (US12513102B2) that describes how to create a virtual double of a social media user — using a large language model trained on their past actions: likes, comments, and more. The idea is to maintain the person’s “presence” online even after a long absence… and if they have left forever — even after death ☕️.
The core concept is as follows: a special bot is launched within the platform, monitoring content — for example, the feed and news stream. It then selects posts based on their ratings, formulates a prompt with a description of the chosen post and the current context. The model then predicts what interaction the user would have made — whether a like or a comment. Afterwards, the platform performs this action on behalf of the deceased or long-offline user.
The patent details permitted and prohibited types of actions for training the model, as well as the possibility of connecting third-party services with the data owner’s consent.
And the creators of Black Mirror are clearly thinking — what should they film now?
