OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT directly into Excel and connected it with data from Bloomberg, Moody’s, and S&P, significantly expanding the capabilities for analytics and automation of financial information.
The new extension — ChatGPT for Excel — is currently in beta and is an add-in for Excel based on GPT-5.4, which works directly within spreadsheets, making work more convenient and faster.
With this tool, you can simply describe a task in text, and the model will automatically build a financial model, update formulas, trace relationships between sheets, and explain the reasons for changes in the final data. This is especially useful when working with large volumes of information and complex calculations.
During internal testing by OpenAI in investment banking, this system achieved a result of 87.3%, compared to only 43.7% for GPT-5.4. The test involved real cases, such as creating three-part financial models with proper formatting and source references.
Additionally, OpenAI has launched integrations with popular financial platforms directly within the ChatGPT chatbot: Moody’s, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire. Now users can receive market indicators, corporate information, or internal documents in a single workflow without switching tabs or manually copying data. Final materials can be exported to PDF or Word with automatically inserted hyperlinks to sources.
For those wishing to use their own databases or information sources, the MCP tool is available. It allows creating custom applications based on ChatGPT and integrating proprietary systems or closed data sources.
Currently, access to these features is available to users with a business plan, educational programs, corporate accounts, and subscribers of Pro and Plus in the US, Canada, and Australia. Within companies, the add-in is disabled by default: it can be activated by administrators through role settings.
A version for Google Sheets has also been announced — no specific release date has been provided.
