AI and Software Development | Boost Productivity but Delay Releases

Vibe Paradox: AI Accelerates Development but Doesn’t Lead to Faster Releases

Artificial intelligence has long transitioned from a rare innovative feature to a standard tool for developers. However, its actual impact on team processes has proven more complex to understand than initially thought. A research firm, T-Technologies, recently published the AI4SDLC Research 2025 report, which attempts to analyze what is really happening with the internal development cycle today.

In brief:

More than half of developers—about 58%—regularly use AI for automatic code generation or augmentation. Around 64% report increased productivity, indicating that the coding process has become faster.

However, trust in such generated software remains very low: only 11% of participants fully trust AI results, while nearly half—49%—state that it should not be trusted. As a result, most teams continue to follow a lengthy and labor-intensive path from making changes to releasing the product to market—sometimes taking weeks or even months.

The most interesting aspect is that the bottleneck in the workflow has shifted. Previously, the main issue was the coding process itself; now, thanks to AI, this stage has significantly sped up. Problems have emerged further along the pipeline—in testing, integration, and release phases. For example: 58% of engineers use AI for coding, while only 24% apply it during code reviews or release refinements. Additionally, 42% do not utilize AI at all when working with legacy code.

Essentially, this reflects a classic automation effect: one stage becomes faster, but the rest of the system often struggles to adapt quickly to these changes. The next major leap forward will not come from AI writing better code but from tools and agents capable of reliably covering the entire workflow—from idea generation to final release.
