The era of old professions has come to an end.
Andrey Karpathy has created an interesting project where each profession in the USA is rated on a scale from 0 to 10 — indicating how likely it is to be replaced by artificial intelligence. He collected data on all 342 occupations from the Bureau of Labor Statistics using automated data collection. Then, each of these professions was input into a large language model (Gemini Flash via OpenRouter), which provided a detailed assessment of vulnerability.
The result is an interactive visual representation — a so-called three-dimensional diagram (treemap). The size of each rectangle shows how many jobs are available in that profession, and its color indicates the level of risk of AI replacement: from green (minimal) to red (maximum).
Regarding vulnerability thresholds: professions with a score of 0-1 include, for example, roofers or cleaners—those engaged in simple manual tasks. The average risk level for such specialists is around 4-5 points; this also includes nurses, salespeople, and doctors. Conversely, fields with higher scores — 8-9 points — are programmers, legal assistants, or data analysts. At the top of the rating is a medical stenographer — with a maximum score of 10.
On average, the scores across the entire list are approximately 5.3 out of 10. Karpathy’s main criterion is that if the work is primarily digital and can be done entirely remotely from home, the chances of automation are significantly higher.
