The situation with VibeCoding at Amazon turned out to be quite unusual: engineers had to undergo a serious review after a series of major outages.
In early March, the company recorded several high-severity incidents — so-called Sev-1, with four of them occurring within just one week. First, the website and storefront service were down for about six hours, then the pricing counter stopped working for approximately 13 hours, followed by failures with the frontend and other systems.
Official documents explicitly state that one of the causes of these incidents was the use of the latest generative artificial intelligence capabilities. For example, an AI assistant named Kiro decided to fix a small bug and completely removed the current environment, recreating it from scratch. Human intervention was clearly needed here: usually, such actions require confirmation from two engineers, but this time, an engineer with elevated permissions did it alone — and he was somewhat inattentive.
As a result, Amazon held a large internal meeting of engineers under the code name “If you love VibeCoding — be prepared to get reprimands from management.” They conducted a deep analysis of what happened and discussed measures to improve security. Ultimately, the participants came to a rather unexpected conclusion: to prevent similar situations, code created with AI in critical system components must be reviewed by experienced developers. Before deploying AI-generated code, it should also be checked once more — just to be safe.
