OpenAI Acquires OpenClaw | Next-Gen AI Agents & Open Source

OpenAI has completely absorbed the OpenClaw (🦞) project and successfully recruited its creator to their side.

Now, Peter Steinberg will lead the development of next-generation agents at the company. Sam Altman highly praised him, calling him a “genius with many brilliant ideas,” and promised that very soon these ideas will form the basis of future OpenAI products.

As for OpenClaw itself: the project continues to exist, is not shutting down, and remains open source. The company has committed to supporting and developing it, and strategically this seems quite logical — so their words can be trusted.

By the way, OpenClaw is currently the record holder for the fastest star count on GitHub. In two days, the repository gathered about 34,000 stars, and in just two months after launch, the number increased from approximately 9,000 to nearly 200,000. For comparison: Kubernetes took three years to reach about 100,000 stars.

Anthropic had every chance to be the first to acquire OpenClaw (especially considering the project’s original name — ClawdBot), but they limited themselves to trademark claims. In the end, OpenAI acted more quickly and managed to secure the most lucrative piece — and we congratulate them on that.
